Bio

Brette Popper has taught yoga, meditation and breath-awareness techniques in New York City for two decades. She both leads group classes and sees students individually. A voracious student herself, she regularly studies Sanskrit, Yoga Philosophy, Yoga Therapy, Tai Chi and Buddhism to supplement her teaching and practice. Brette is registered with the Yoga Alliance at the E-RYT 500 level. She is also a YACEP®, certified to teach for continuing education credits. She was certified at the 500-hour level by Alison West’s Yoga Union and continues to study extensively with Dr. Ganesh Mohan, clocking in more than 400 hours as part of the Svastha Yoga Therapy program. She has over 250 hours of training in Iyengar teacher Nikki Costello’s Enrichment Program and another 250 hours with Amy Matthews; taking her Embodied Asana and Yoga Anatomy programs. She has been certified in techniques for Prenatal Yoga, Yoga and Osteoporosis, Back Care, Yoga and Alexander Technique and Restorative Yoga. She has also attended several workshops and programs on Yoga and Social Justice and teaching court-involved youth. Brette is a regular asana student of Genny Kapuler’s, and assisted her evening classes for six years. She studies Sanskrit and Yoga Philosophy with Prem Sadasivananda and Tibetan Buddhism with Khenpo Pema Wangdak. She has also studied with several monks at Thiksey Monastery in Ladakh. Until 2017 she was the Founder of YogaCity NYC, the city’s premier website for yoga news and information. In that role, she published, wrote and acted as moderator for public panel discussions on topics of interest to the yoga community. The panel discussions tackled issues like the role of the yoga guru, diversity in class settings and how yoga can be pursued “off the mat.”
