Purpose

An intimate training with true depth. This in-person YTT will take teachers deeper into yogic philosophy and lifestyle, self-discovery, and of course developing the professional skills and knowledge required to teach various styles of yoga with confidence, presence, and poise.

Style/Lineage

This teacher training program is a modern version of Hatha Yoga influenced by Ashtanga, Vinyasa, and Iyengar lineages. The focus with the asana is on intentional, safe, mindful movement, mobility, and sustainability rather than aesthetics (the way a pose looks).

By the end of this program, graduates will be able to…

Yoga History & Theory
  • Describe the yoga philosophy contained in bhagavad gita and yoga sutra and how to apply it to daily life for contemporary experience.
  • Explain the core ideas of the chakra system of hatha yoga as described by janahva sundari including the sanskrit name, seed mantra, common associations and what qualities make it balanced or imbalanced.
  • List the names of all asanas one is teaching with proper sanskrit name and pronunciation
Business Skills
  • Understand important aspects of the business of yoga including how to budget and create retreats, workshops, and get hired to teach.
Lifestyle & Ethics
  • Apply the basics of dosha theory of ayurveda to one's lifestyle and diet for personal balance.
  • Explain the basic concepts of ayurveda including the 5 elements, dosha, and core qualities to identify when doshas are out of balance.
Practice Skills
  • Demonstrate and teach durgha, bhastrika, kapahalabhati, nadi shodana, and ujjayi pranayam with correct posture, mudra, and bandha appropriate for each technique
  • Practice and recognize various styles of yoga including bhakti, sivananda, hatha, mantra yoga, yin, and iyengar.
Teaching Skills
  • Apply safe and effective hands on assists to bring students into more ease in any core posture including (standing, seated, back/for bend, twists, prone and inverted)
  • Notice the body language of trauma in students by identifying hyper vs hypo arousal and providing options for students to find balance.
  • Modify and teach beginner and intermediate pranayama techniques based on a students condition
  • Modify yoga practices for pre-natal students by offering posture options optimal for woman at each stage of pregnancy.
  • Teach and sequence creative vinyasa, yin, restorative, and prenatal yoga sequences that guide students skillfully towards a peak pose and wisely choose postures and transitions.
Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics
  • Identify when students nervous systems are activated and apply trauma aware modifications by offering alternative practices.
  • Discuss the relationship of yoga and the central nervous system including cns activation, vagus nerve tonification, and the fight/flight response.
  • Explain anatomical terms such as flexion, extension, and range of motion of major joints related to safe yoga practice

AYC allows each school to state and evaluate the competencies each student acquires. Students rate how well the program delivered them.
