- The primary function of the breathing diaphragm
- The relationship of breath and the nervous system and how it applies to forward and backward bending
- Prana and the primary energy channels: Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna Nadis
- The primary movements of the spine, functional joint and muscular movements, and the importance of a healthy skeletal system
- The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and the 8 limbs of yoga as a guideline for living a meaningful life
- The practical application of the Bhagavad Gita for navigating challenges and finding peace
- The five Koshas and the interconnected layers of our being
- Sthira sukham asanam as a foundational principle of practice
- Integrating Santosha and Viveka into practice
- Professional boundaries, staying in your area of expertise, and appropriate touch in asana
- Importance of basic skeletal alignment, modifications, and variations
- Sequencing a class, cueing, and developing a teaching voice
- Class room management and creating a safe space
- Self-care as a yoga teacher
- Using pranayama for nervous system regulation
- A safe and effective asana practice consisting of: Grounding, Moving Warm-Ups, Standing Postures, Seated Postures, Inversions, & Rest

AYC allows each school to state and evaluate the competencies each student acquires. Students rate how well the program delivered them.

Trainees will be evaluated on teaching skills during weekend sessions through practice teaching clinics. They will teach a 10-15 minute segment on each of the six parts of asana: Grounding, Warm-up, Standing Postures, Seated Postures, Inversions, and Rest. They will also be required to teach a 60 minute class, open to the public, at Cadence Yoga Center at the end of the course. Trainees will take a written exam, which will test the knowledge and skills obtained.
